Uber stripped of London operator licence

Mubasher: Uber has been stripped of its licence to operate in London, after the transport authorities refused to grant the US ride-hailing company a renewal, according to the Guardian.

Transport for London (TfL) said that it identified a “pattern of failures” by Uber, having found that more than 14,000 were taken with uninsured drivers.

“Despite addressing some of these issues, TfL does not have confidence that similar issues will not reoccur in the future, which has led it to conclude that the company is not fit and proper at this time,” the regulator’s statement was quoted by the Guardian.

The TfL decision came at the end of a two-month probationary extension granted last September, on the condition that Uber should address issues with checks on drivers, insurance and safety.

The decision will not result in Uber hire vehicles disappearing immediately from the streets of London as the company said it will appeal the decision.

“TfL’s decision not to renew Uber’s licence in London is extraordinary and wrong, and we will appeal,” Uber’s regional general manager Jamie Heywood was quoted by the Guardian.

This meant that Uber cars can continue to operate until the outcome as long as it starts official proceedings within 21 days.

“We will continue to operate as normal and will do everything we can to work with TfL to resolve this situation,” Heywood said.
